The quality of worship this week has been as high as I can recall with a quite outstanding band and gorgeous liturgies put together by Micky Youngson.

This morning's focus was on some words of Jesus, recorded in Luke 13:20-21

And again he said, ‘To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.’

Vice-President Ruth Pickles wanted us to consider how the idea of baking was a good image for considering the Kingdom of God and our part in its work.

Baking was "satisfyingly messy" but totally dependent on collaboration, she said. Involved were the woman, flour, yeast, salt, honey, sugar, water, temperature and the oven but also it was essential to use the right proportions and the right temperature to avoid the end product being inedible.

What a good parable for the Kingdom of God, said Ruth, recalling the work of places like Somewhere Else in central Liverpool as a new way of being church. There friendship is enabled through yeast, flour and the process of making bread by hand.

But, said Ruth, huge change - like the action of yeast - begins small and we needed to recognise what we could and should do.

Enabling change across churches, circuits and districts as well as affecting denominations and cultures was risky, demanding and costly, said Ruth, but the Gospel called on us to act like yeast.

"We have become a people who identify themselves as not belonging to Christ but as members of High Street, Old Street or Bethesda or wherever ... dwindling in numbers or not we determine our building is the only place we can worship God week by week," she said.

"Sometimes our defence is that we are honouring our forebears; our history, but we ignore the message of our Gospel at our peril - we need to get messy, get collaborative.

They took a piece of rubbish and walked through the labyrinth - almost a quarter of a mile all told - left the rubbish at the centre on a sand mound topped by a cross and then walked back with a pebble that they could keep.

It's such a simple idea and yet the conversations were so profound: with people who had no faith; with Sikhs; Moslems; with whole families; with children who jumped over the sand humps and with people who asked if they were allowed to walk the labyrinth.

On one day alone, 276 people left the 'rubbish' of their lives at the centre of the labyrinth and walked out ...

The theme in our worship this morning was of light dispelling darkness and we were reminded of Jesus' words in Matthew's Gospel: 'let your light so shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father in heaven.' Matthew 5: 16

Later, Helen Cameron continued our deeper look at Colossians 1: 15-20 under the theme of Living out the Gospel within the culture, not apart from it.

The passage was an invitation to re-imagine the world as very different from the one we see, touch and feel, she said, but Paul invited us to realise we are not sealed off from the world - we breathe same air as everyone. Our calling is to be faithful in this time.

"We are created in Christ and for Christ: the cosmic Christ - Christ for all time and the whole universe," said Helen. "By the power of the Cross none can rule over Christ nor ultimately anyone joined to Christ."

That new community in Christ was one of restored relationships where compassion, generosity and grace were the hallmarks of the light the church shed on the world.

One of the most public opportunities we will have to take the Gospel onto the streets will be the Olympic Games next year and there was overwhelming support for a plea from Lord Mawhinney to get behind More than Gold which will facilitate the Christian response.

Around 6,000 - 10,000 Christians are expected to arrive from overseas to help share the Gospel during the Olympics and Lord Mawhinney also told those who are not inclined to sport 'Get over it!' because we will be flooded by it!

His dream was that, all over the country, local churches would erect big screens in their areas and welcome people to share events based on the Games - to plug in and light up their communities.

It's not a new song any more, but one that keeps rolling round my head is Run by Snow Patrol. You can't stretch the metaphor too far but I always hear God singing part of the song:

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

We don't have a choice. We shine in our communities. The issue is whether we choose to hide our lights or let it out.

Lord, graciously hear us ... pardon?

What does it mean to listen to the voice of God? How does the Word get through to us? This question formed the foundation of the first day of business for the Representative Session here at Southport.

As we began conferring, we heard about the Word:

How the Word came to Elijah as he hid in his cave. I've always been struck by God's question, asked twice, "What are you doing here, Elijah?". I've long wondered on which word God put the stress in the question and whether it was different each time: what, are, you, doing, here, Elijah. Was the inquiry followed by a pause, a question mark, a grunt or an exclamation mark? Eventually, of course - after wind, earthquake and fire - it was, as Ken Jackson reminded us, "the sound of sheer silence". [For a different take on that image, see here.]

Also, through the prologue to John's Gospel, how the Word came as a human being, made flesh for us in Jesus.

Ken referred to Lucy Winkett's book Our Sound is Our Wound: Contemplative Listening to a Noisy World and said that our conferring would invoke many things among us: it would inspire, irritate, anger, rejoice our hearts.
It would make us laugh and weep as people spoke with authority, tentatively, with passion or nervously.
But listening was as important as our speaking; active listening was urgent if we were to hear God's Word for today, to know what God, the Church and the world were saying to us.
The crucial thing, of course, is that we needed to make sure we were not just listening to one another and - as Ken's grand-daughter had said to him - 'You need to listen properly, with your eyes open.'

We then prayed - interestingly - a prayer that included the response Lord hear us, Lord graciously hear us! Perhaps we should have prayed May we graciously hear you, Lord.

So began a day of listening - moving into the General Secretary's Report, with the Rev Dr Martyn Atkins offering a bold vision which has come out of multiple conversations with people around the Connexion. There should be no illusions, he said. The journey towards becoming a "discipleship movement shaped for mission" would not be easy and has costs. It would involve choosing to do things and to stop doing others - it could not be business as usual but Martyn asked us to gather up our courage and our faith and vote for change.

Speaker after speaker affirmed what the report called "the direction of travel", variously referring to it as dynamite and urging that its energy and potential shouldn't be lost in its necessary passing on into the church's committees and working groups.

There was a real sense of 'moment' in the room as we enthusiastically supported Martyn's report. Decisions being reached here mattered for the sake of the people called Methodist and the Kingdom of God. We can make a difference.

In a link to the opening devotions, Fidelio Patron took the metaphor of Elijah's cave. Some caves, he said, were natural, some man-made but very few have windows and you rarely see a way out. This report allows us to see a way out, he said.

Caves very rarely have water, food or light and there would be an urgency to get out or die, said Fidelio. For the people called Methodist there was now a sense of urgency. "We’re very good at prolonging things," he said. "We are still pointing the way forward but we need to do something. How do we overcome our procedures and do something now."

Ultimately, we voted to continue travelling in the direction that Martyn told us the church had asked us to take. We heard him when he said: "I am convinced that God desires a healthy, more vibrant Methodism, offered anew to God as its proper ‘owner’ and as a fruitful and willing part of the One Church of Christ, for the sake of the world God loves and in Christ redeemed."

Powerful, poignant and potent

There is no day in the life of the Methodist Church like Conference Sunday, when people travel from all corners of the Connexion to worship together and then disperse for services of ordination.

It is a powerful, poignant and potent day for the church, when we see embodied in those about to be ordained a whole range of emotions.

for those who have come to support their family member and friend it is a celebration and a major milestone on a long, long road.

for those who have been ordained at a previous Conference it is a moment rich with emotion and memory.

for those who are seeing, possibly for the first time, the presbyter or deacon who will join their circuit team, it is a glimpse into the future God will build for and with them.

It is a solemn moment in the proper use of that word - but done with joy and passion and plenty of smiles.

The Methodist people are very good at mixing business and worship and formal motions accompanied by standing votes go with raised hands and clapping.

President Leo Osborn challenged us to keep our eyes on Jesus as the image of the invisible God, the one who holds all things together.

It reminded me of a Martyn Joseph song, paradoxically called Everything in Heaven Comes Apart, It was an improvement on “strangers” but still assumed we wouldn't see them again, said Leo, who added: 'Well as Jesus didn’t say “Blessed are those who expect nothing. They shall never be disappointed!'

His challenge to Conference - and the wider church - was to get a balance. He acknowledged his background as an evangelical, as someone for whom the sacraments have become more important and who longed for to encourage every initiative to bring nearer the unity of the church in visible form.

He said: 'I believe in the centrality of the Cross and Resurrection and in the overriding authority of Scripture but I don’t find that that provides me with answers to every question or that despite living in Newcastle every moral or ethical decision is black and white. Indeed I have some sympathy with John Robinson of Honest to God fame who towards the end of his life said that he believed more and more about less and less!'

While talking about us being theological, pragmatic and connexional ... his focus was on pastoral care.

'For at the very heart of the Gospel is the pastoral image of Jesus the Good Shepherd,' said Leo. It wasn't just an image: Jesus demonstrated in words and actions what knowing his sheep, calling his sheep, listening to his sheep, loving his sheep, laying down his life for the sheep reaching out to the lost sheep looks like as an indication of what God is like.

And Leo took us to the Presbyteral Ordination Services where the call to Peter to “tend my sheep and feed my lambs” is echoed over and over again, especially when The President says to the newly ordained: "Be shepherds to the flock of Christ. As you exercise mercy, do not forget justice, as you minister discipline do not forget mercy; that when Christ the Chief Shepherd comes in glory he may count you among his faithful servants".

He reminded us that ultimately people come to faith through people and that we become unbalanced if we think worship and mission don't need pastoral care.

After a tea break, we heard from new Vice President Ruth Pickles whose theme for the year is Learning as disciples of Jesus. She drew us to George Herbert's poem The Elixir, which we had sung as a hymn, including:
A man who looks on glass,
On it may stay his eye,
Or if he pleaseth through it pass,
And then the heavens espy.

Ruth will be using four images: window, door, path, and a child on the edge of the sea and she took us on a journey through her faith experiences using these images.

The risks and opportunities of Christian discipleship involved risk - looking through windows, going through doors, along paths and standing on the shoreline as new opportunities open up.

Saturday Morning

Knowing you Jesus, there is no greater thing were the words that greeted hundreds of Conference reps as they made their way into the Southport Convention Centre theatre on Saturday morning.

The Conference band were welcoming us in for the opening act of worship as Fridays Ministerial Session gave way to the Representative Session - the full Conference mingling for the first time.

As ever, Conference is a glorious mix of worship and work, and for 2011 we are mining the resources of Singing the Faith, the new hymn resource for the Methodist Church. Its been a frequent phrase throughout the year as Ive sat in meetings of various groups at local and Connexional level.

Martyn was very clear. This is not the Connexional Team ploughing ahead, whether anyone else want to make the journey or not. God seems to be giving us the encouragement, he said. But we don't want to assume anything. We believe we are hearing the Holy Spirit say that this seems to be the way, keep walking in it.

And, as the report and later speakers affirmed, being a discipleship movement shaped for mission can only work if we consciously hold on to the truth of being a Connexional Church that affirms lay leadership.

Issues of patterns of ministry, Gods worthship and our worship, evangelism and making more disciples, partnerships with Christians locally and the worldwide family of Methodism are all part of the opportunities for us as a discipleship movement shaped for mission.

A stream of speakers affirmed the report as exciting, thrilling, demanding much of us but the right report for this time in our history. In the words of the report: the direction of travel we need to take.

(Uploaded by Anna on Gareth's behalf, due to technical issues).

Methodist Conference 2011 is nearly here!

This year's Methodist Conference takes place 30 June - 7 July at the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre.

Watch this space for updates from our regular Methodist Conference blogger, Revd Gareth Hill. Around 40 people who travelled by coach to lobby for the college, watched from the gallery as attempts to convince us there was a future failed.

When these kinds of significant moments come up, Conference always behaves itself. There was a clear appreciation that in historical terms and its impact on individuals, this was a big deal.

As a member of the review group into Wesley College, it became clear as we pursued the very long process of researching the options that the story of the past 40 years and more had been of a failure to make decisions. This time the decision to close was taken with a significant majority.

A second group of watchers, representing an apparently agitated Jewish community, studied very closely as we received a report on justice for Palestine and Israel. The response of Jews in advance of Conference included accusations that Methodism was being anti-Semitic for advocating a boycott of goods produced in the Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories.

In the end we backed the boycott and encouraged Methodists across Britain to do the same. The decision is a response to a call from a group of Palestinian Christians, a growing number of Jewish organisations, both inside Israel and worldwide, and the World Council of Churches. A majority of governments recognise the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories as illegitimate under international law.

Christine Elliott, Secretary for External Relationships, said: “This decision has not been taken lightly, but after months of research, careful consideration and finally, today’s debate at the Conference. The goal of the boycott is to put an end to the existing injustice. It reflects the challenge that settlements present to a lasting peace in the region.”

It seemed to be a day for difficult decisions as we confirmed a cut in the multi-million pound Youth Participation Strategy. It’s still a multi-million pound pilot programme and still offers a real chance to engage with young people - the difference is that more of the financial cost will have to be met from districts and local churches.

There’s no rule about declaring an interest when you’re writing a blog but whatever the blogging equivalent is then I’ve just done it. We gave approval for publishing a hymnbook - to be called Singing the Faith - which will be launched with a ‘big sing’ event at next year’s Southport Conference.

The collection contains 772 hymns and songs, plus 59 canticles and psalms. It has been six years in the making, and will be the first authorised Methodist collection in thirty years.
The news release says “leading modern hymn writers, including many Methodists, are represented alongside the best of Methodist heritage, such as hymns by Charles Wesley”.

My declaration of interest is because I will have three hymns in Singing the Faith but I still feel as I did when this whole debate started: we don’t need a new book.

When it’s published, the full music edition will cost £30, the words edition £9 and the large print words edition £15. At a future date, these will be supported by electronic resources, including a website offering a free range of extra resources and products relating to the core hymn collection.

A quick tot-up with the largest church in the circuit where I work reckoned that to buy music copies for the choir and word copies for the 400 members would set that one church back £5,000. In a cash-conscious time a church that has equipped itself with contemporary technology will be satisfied with a copyright licence and a data projector.

So Wesley College, Israel-Palestine, youth work, a hymn resource ... all attention grabbers.

But for me the highlight of the day was the communion service which began the day and Vice President Eunice Attwood’s sermon.

She took the story of Zacchaeus and reminded us that:
- Jesus called him by name
- Jesus invited himself to Zacchaeus’ home
- Jesus didn’t make a diary date, but came straight away
- Jesus was happy to become ‘guilty by association’ with supposed ‘sinners’

Eunice’s challenge to us was to be aware of what we were clinging to and learn to be as extravagently generous as Jesus.

Jesus calls the poor and rich
to a carnival of praise:
dovetailed into heaven’s gala
by the carpenter’s embrace.

Jesus leads the dance of life,
calling each of us by name.
Partners on the road to freedom:
joy and hope eclipsing shame.

Jesus lays a feast for us
- once excluded, now his guests.
Unexpected invitations
make outsiders heaven-blessed.

Gareth Hill Copyright © 2010 GraceNotes Music

What would you lay down? Archbishop's challenge

Knowing what we were prepared to lay down for the sake of the Gospel was the challenge to Conference today from Archbishop Rowan Williams.

He explored issues of compromise and confrontation in the lives of the apostles Peter and Paul at the end of an afternoon where a number of potential tensions in our church life had been explored.

His bedrock question was not about what issue we would go to the stake for but “what’s the life that you’re prepared to lay down?”

In talking about the Church’s way of being, working and mission - specifically Fresh Expressions and ecumenism - Archbishop Rowan made it clear he was offering no solutions. “And anyway, you wouldn’t listen any more than my church does,” he joked.

He described the difference between Peter and Paul succinctly: “Peter knows who Jesus is and Paul knows what Jesus means”.

It was a mistake simply to talk about the ministry of Peter as being about order while Paul is about creative newness, he said. “Peter has the ability to create embarrassing situations, he’s not simply the apostle of good order. At times it leads him into astonishingly creative moments of innovation - and sometimes simply into mess.”

Paul, said the Archbishop, knows what Jesus means ... grace upon grace, a kingdom without boundaries; reconciliation, transformation for every human being.

The sense of urgency of who Jesus is was ultimately at the heart of the Covenant between our two churches, he said.

In ecumenical conversations we began with a Petrine approach, saying “‘for heaven’s sake this is ridiculous we’ve got to do something. We can’t leave it to the experts to sort this out because we know who Jesus is’.” The ecumenical movement started with people prepared to move out and live with unfinished business.

“We may find a few years on that nothing very much is happening and the spectre of Paul rises up to say ‘I did warn you’ and you can’t just sit there in this glorious mess because it then becomes unsatisfying.”

Neither confrontation or compromise would work unless you had a vision of the communion you longed for, said the archbishop.

“It means going back again and again and again to where it all started and thinking Jesus: who he is and what it means. Only that gets us to something of a church life that’s not a whole series of posture strikings or desperate personnel management.”

When it came to mission, and particularly Fresh Expressions, Archbishop Rowan said the tension in mission history was similar to that which Peter and Paul recognised.

“The history of the church’s mission is a history of many effort to reach to and speak with those who won’t instinctively understand the language you’re speaking,” he said.

“Some have been right and some corrupting and wrong and for some it’s too soon to say. There’s no alternative but to keep going back together to the Gospel.”

But he warned us: “It’s most unlikely we won’t find a policy for which we won’t have to repent at some point. Get used to it - it’s Christian!”

And he added: "However hard we try to persuade ourselves there’s a solution without cost we need to learn, as a great moral theologian said, that the great moral question is ‘who’s going to get hurt?’.

“The true apostolic quest is how do I share the cost? How do I put myself at risk alongside those I want to speak for or pray for?” he said.

“What united Peter and Paul - other than salvation in Christ - was martyrdom. Not Peter as the source of authority but giving his life for the Gospel.

“Whether our lives have a Peter or Paul flavour should lead us back to the cross. Where and how do we share the risk. How do we avoid words without price; gestures without suffering at every level? What’s the life that I’m prepared to lay down?”

And so, in the spirit of a day when we’ve looked at working with the church overseas and our ecumenical partners, here’s a hymn:

There is a world beyond our world

a dream beyond our sight:

a common call to unity

in service of the light.

Engaging faith - God’s living church.

Transforming love - God’s true delight.

Our mission in the Way of Christ

cannot be done alone.

A partnership of active prayer

brings heaven’s blessings down.

Engaging faith - God’s living church.

Transforming love - God’s shining crown.

In Jesus we are called to go

and in his cause expire:

to be a Gospel family

who set this world on fire.

Engaging faith - God’s living church.

Transforming love - God’s great desire.

Gareth Hill Copyright © 2010 GraceNotes Music

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://methodistconference.blogspot.com/2010/06/what-would-you-lay-down-archbishops.html' title='What would you lay down? At the moment it’s in!

There was an illustration of how painful Conference decisions are as a discussion of the overall budget included the proposal that the Youth Participation Strategy would receive significantly less money and therefore would employ fewer people.

Perhaps tension was one of the watchwords today. What to do with ministers’ pensions had been a hot topic leading up to this week and a number of people had tuned in online to see what happened. After some jiggling with notices of motion and memorials it was agreed to tie the normal pension date to government legislation.

During the afternoon, we switched to a new way of working for Conference and moved into small groups to discuss issues around a research project into what’s being called “the missing generation”.

The groups gave everyone the chance to contribute in conversations and bring insight from their experience. Some people skived off - and even tweeted that they had - but it’s a method of conferring that works well and the group I was in felt affirmed and energised by the chance to contribute in ways that would be impossible if the issue was debated on the floor of Conference.

So, as a reflection on today, here is something:

We struggle in the tension

of a call to walk in faith;

this challenge to be servants,

built on God’s astounding grace.

We place our hopes and terrors

in the wounded hands of Christ

and set out on a journey

which demands we pay a price.

We know we cannot settle

when the call of Christ has come:

in desert and oasis

or when faith and joy are numb.

Our life as holy pilgrims

is patterned on the Son:

his bruised and staggered footsteps

mark the journey we must type='text'>Whoops, whistles and God's invitation

Cheers, whoops and whistles greeted the ordinands as they were presented to Conference this morning in one of the clearest signs of how willingly we have loosened our stays in recent years.

President Alison Tomlin urged them to wave at their families and supporters as the worshipful mix of celebration and solemnity dovetailed perfectly.

In the service we received presbyters and deacons “into full connexion” - as our gloriously-obscure jargon puts it - and lovingly sent most of them on to ordination services in the area for later in the day.

There was not a mention of the football - not one - even though almost every ordination service would clash with it. Today it just didn’t matter.

I was asked if the tables and chairs being set up outside the Guildhall were anything to do with us but they were for the Sunday afternoon tea dance taking place directly underneath the giant screen which would not show the England-Germany game. Too rowdy as a companion for such a gentile pursuit as a tea dance.

The Methodist celebrations began outside long before the service as delegates, ordinands, friends and families gathered in the sunshine. In a remarkable demonstration of servant ministry one of Conference’s respected ministers was even seen cleaning the shoes of another ... from one Central Hall to another!

This day is, like no other in the Methodist Church, a day of journeys as people come from all parts of the Connexion to support those being ordained. As we were reminded at the start of the service, some would have absolutely no idea what was going on but wanted to be there for their loved ones.

President Alison Tomlin, in her sermon, picked up on an Old Testament challenge from Isaiah where God confronts the people with a list of all they have done wrong, trying to live in fantasy world, as she put it.

At the end, instead of punishment there’s an invitation to come back but the people reject it. “The Scriptures are full of people running away whenever God says anything. I understand that,” said Alison, as the ordinands and the rest of us listened.

She asked us: “Do you believe in a God who created all things; holds all creation in the palm of a hand? That God will wait for you.

“That God loves you so much. That God will wait to be gracious to you; standing alongside you in whatever your life currently contains until you feel able to say your next ‘yes’. That is such a gift and such a promise and so amazing.”

As the ordinands began to anticipate their service - the moment when a congregation would shout out the words “they are worthy” and propel them to a new phase of ministry - Alison had a word of realism for them.

“You’d think God’s gracious words would always be a joy and a delight but sometimes they are so hard to bear,” she said. “They are a challenge and a demand and an opportunity that we don’t feel ready for.

“We know God is saying ‘you do it’. They may even be words asking us to do something that is so hard for us that we say ‘please not yet, can I take a little longer to say yes’. God will say ‘yes’.”

Sometimes as Church it feels that we need to learn those lessons. What are God’s gracious words to us? What are we able to say ‘yes’ to today and what is it all right to ask for a bit of time about?

Joy Dine’s great hymn God who sets us on a journey has become very much part of this ordination weekend for Methodism and, as we have always said that we learn our theology through singing, then Conference is getting into the habit of stating that we need to ask God consistently to:

End our longing for the old days

grant the vision that we lack -

once we’ve started on this journey

there can be no turning back

And so to today’s vuvuzela moments:

ordinands coming in to Come on and celebrate, some dancing down the aisle.

Guide me O thou Great Jehovah - not quite up to Millennium Park standards but the harmonies sounded good up in the gallery

Sadly the World Cup, though full of the noise of the vuvuzela, didn’t quite live up to expectations for England fans. But, even for defeated and probably overpaid soccer stars, the invitation to come and rest in God is still made.

God on Twitter ... and getting out of the box

This could have been a difficult day for Methodist Conference to get into top gear, depending on your allegiance.

After all, Wales had lost to the All Blacks at rugby for the second week running; tensions were high at the World Cup with less than 24 hours before England faced Germany once more in a knockout match ... and Daleks, Cybermen and every evil in the cosmos had conspired to seal Dr Who inside the Pandorica..........

Meanwhile, as the sun blazed down outside, we put on our finery and headed inside.

Is that an act of pure madness or something about the conviction that what we have to do together is part of becoming life-long world-changing disciples?

Certainly, as we sat inside Portsmouth’s Guildhall, there was no getting away from challenges to be somewhere else. Neither Alison Tomlin or Eunice Attwood, this year’s President and Vice-President, would let us get away with being obsessed with navel-gazing ... or even naval-gazing as we're in this seafaring city.

We did what we always do: combining our business with worship - and by the way we have learned to do our worship so much better over recent Conferences - but we were challenged by both Alison and Eunice to be part of a Church that "throws parties for prostitutes” and listens to those no one else wants to listen to.

While Alison wanted us to pay attention Eunice urged us to open our eyes to God’s transforming love.

To pay attention, said Alison, was not just understanding about God at the centre but recognising that “God is usually at the edge, on the periphery - out there with those who have been discarded and neglected, who are distressed and distraught”.

It’s about “paying attention to those with whom we profoundly disagree - even our enemy” she said.

Alison, who spoke without notes, reminded us how easy it is to be so busy in the Church doing good things for God.

“But it’s more than inside the Church,” she said. “If we pay attention to God we won’t stay inside the church. If we pay attention to God we will have to do the things God challenges us to do: to go out among the people that need to hear the message that God loves them; who have no voice; who have had doors shut in their faces; that others reject and despise. Isn’t that an echo of what they did to Jesus?”

The transforming love of God was the recurring theme for Eunice, who told us about working with Street Pastors, being with healing teams on the streets, sitting with sex workers and of her own journey from a childhood in Sepnnymoor, County Durham.

It was all shaped by her conviction that the transforming love of Christ was what made God’s people a transforming presence in the world.

She said: “God thinks you are amazing ... we should be jumping up and down at that but we often find it so difficult, we’re not always so convinced about it.

“I believe we need to hear these words afresh ... those amazing words. God’s love is not caused by anything we can do or say: God’s character and nature is love.”

And, in a word for those who were tweeting from the Conference hall, and listening online, she added: “I believe if God had a Facebook page his status would permanently say ‘I love you’. If God was on Twitter his tweet would say ‘I love You’ and he would say it until we believed it.”

After a day like today we clearly have to get out of our box - mind you, what happened with the Pandorica?

So what were today vuvuzela
